BE PREPARED TO LEARN
This year we will be exploring the world of literature. We will read and write. We will discuss, debate, and discover. We will learn what it means to work together, support each other, and become a successful community of lifelong learners. The purpose of English Language Arts and Reading is to learn the art of using the English language to communicate. Our goal is to learn to communicate using the conventions of the English language in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. In addition, to improving reading skills through practice and by using vocabulary and comprehension strategies.

EXPECTATIONS
- Students will respect themselves/others at all times (hands, feet, body, and objects to oneself). Students will listen to others, wait to be called upon to speak out or leave assigned area, and will avoid disruptive noises (singing, whistling, tapping, etc.).
- Students will respect the classroom by being on time and prepared to learn with supplies and a positive attitude. All talking and visiting STOPS once the tardy bell rings.
- Students will follow the Hernandez Hero Guidelines (Honesty, Excellence, Respect & Ownership).

HOMEWORK, CLASSWORK & GRADING
- All class work must be attempted in order for the student to receive a grade. If a student requires extra time, s/he may turn in late work. However, late work will only be accepted one week from original assignment date.
- Classwork and homework must be completed, even in the case of absence. If a student is absent s/he is responsible for making up any missed assignments within the next two class periods.
- Students who do not attempt to demonstrate learning by completing required learning activities or homework will be assigned a 0.
- Grading categories are as follows:
Summative Assessment (final attempt at tasks/tests/projects) 50%
Formative Assessment (class quizzes) 40%
Daily Work (classwork/homework) 10%
LATE WORK
- No late work accepted during the last week of the marking period.
- Work missed due to absences must be turned in within the next two class periods.
- If not turned in by then we will make parent contact and require tutorials until the work is complete.
